It doesn't have to be that way. You can control it.
You can have plenty of energy all day long if you eat with the following guidelines in mind...
#1: Eat some protein with breakfast.
It helps to balance your blood sugar and controls your appetite too, to get you through until lunch.
#2: Eat smaller portions.
The Japanese island of Okinawa is home to people with some of the longest life spans in the world.
They follow the Confucian teaching, "Eat until you are 80% full."
In the U.S., we typically eat until we're very full, or until all the food is gone. (especially dangerous in restaurants :-)
Eating less eases the burden on digestion, leaving more energy for other functions - like staying awake!
#3: Eat fewer carbs.
Eating less sugar and refined starches gives you consistent energy through the day.
Starchy, refined carbs like pasta, rice, bread, - processed foods high in carbohydrates - tend to spike our blood sugar levels, and what goes up must come down...
(Inconvenient when you need to stay alert.)
Even in Okinawa, since the 1960s they've begun eating more like Americans, (rice and bread instead of sweet potatoes), and their long life spans are getting shorter.
If you love your carbs like I do, try opting for high-fiber, compound carbohydrates like sweet potatoes and quinoa.
They give you sustained energy, rather than spiking your blood sugar like refined carbs do.
Watching your protein, portions, and carbs are three easy ways to boost your physical and mental alertness and, as they say in Star Trek,
